S.B. 915 Summary

• Authorizes the issuance of special number plates commemorating Duke Kahanamoku to recognize his contributions as an Olympic swimmer, lifeguard, sheriff, and ambassador of aloha.

• Requires written permission from Malama Pono, Inc. (owner of Duke Kahanamoku trademark) before plates can be issued, with all proceeds benefiting the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.

• Director of Finance must establish plate design in consultation with county finance directors, police chiefs, and the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, containing words or images identifying Duke Kahanamoku while maintaining visibility of standard plate information.

• Charges applicants a special number plate fee covering county costs plus a fundraising fee determined by the Director of Finance; revenue from fundraising fees directed to the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation for water safety, swim education, and water athlete development programs.

• Allows Director of Finance to revoke all special plates if fewer than 150 registered owners obtain them within three years of initial issuance; effective July 1, 2044.
