S.R. 177 Summary

• Requests the Director of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and the Contractors License Board to ensure at least two board members are Specialty Contractors licensed in structural contracting subclassifications (carpentry framing, masonry, ornamental/guardrail/fencing, pile driving, post tensioning, reinforcing steel, structural welding, or welding).

• Specifies that the required expertise must come from independently obtained specialty licenses, not from automatic specialty classifications granted with General Engineering or General Building Contractor licenses.

• Requests the department and board consider establishing an advisory committee focused on structural contracting issues and review whether current rules allowing automatic specialty license issuance without examination or fees adequately protect public safety.

• Requires submission of a report on findings and any proposed legislation to the Legislature no later than twenty days before the 2023 Regular Session convenes.

• Directs certified copies be sent to the Director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and the Chairperson of the Contractors License Board.
