H.B. 1294 Summary

• Requires every candidate for public office in Hawaii to use their legal name for all election purposes, overriding any other law to the contrary.

• Amends Section 11-112 to specify that ballots shall contain the "legal" names of candidates instead of allowing alternatives.

• Removes provisions in Section 12-3 that allowed candidates to use "the name by which the candidate is commonly known" on nomination papers and ballots, requiring only the candidate's legal name.

• Eliminates the option for candidates to request printing of Hawaiian or English equivalents or nicknames on ballots.

• Takes effect on March 22, 2075.
