H.B. 268 - Disposable Wipes

• Prohibits the sale, offer for sale, and distribution for sale of any "flushable wipe" in Hawaii, effective June 30, 3000.

• Defines "flushable wipe" as a disposable wipe packaged and labeled as "flushable," "sewer safe," "septic safe," or otherwise indicating it is appropriate for toilet disposal, excluding products labeled as "toilet paper."

• Violations are subject to penalty provisions under Part II of Chapter 342D, Hawaii Revised Statutes, in addition to any other remedies provided by law.

• Addresses concerns that flushable wipes do not break down in wastewater systems like toilet paper does and can clog residential plumbing, municipal sewer pipes, pump stations, and treatment plants, creating costly backups and public health risks.
