SB1506 Summary

• Establishes a safe routes for people implementation program within the department of transportation to develop strategies and facilitate transportation projects ensuring keiki and kupuna can safely walk, bike, or roll to common destinations through Vision Zero policies and ground transportation facility plans.

• Creates a safe routes for people implementation committee with representatives from the legislature, state departments, county transportation offices, and community organizations to advise the program, review project proposals, and submit annual reports to the governor and legislature.

• Renames the safe routes to school program special fund to the safe routes for people special fund and expands its purpose to fund both school-based and general pedestrian and bicyclist safety projects selected by the implementation committee.

• Appropriates $50,000,000 for fiscal years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 to fund priority projects identified by the safe routes for people implementation committee to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety.

• Takes effect July 1, 2050.
