S.B. 1532 Summary

• Establishes the Hawaii Leadership Awards Program within the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to honor persons who have made outstanding contributions to Hawaii and serve as inspiration to others.

• Awards presented annually to one person in each of 12 categories: Arts, Business and Labor, Entertainment, Food and Drink, Literature, Music, Public Service, Science, Sports, Community Engagement, Profile in Courage, and Friend of Hawaii.

• Award recipients must have resided in Hawaii for at least seven years, except for the Friend of Hawaii category; awardees receive a medal, certificate of honor, and permanent recognition in an archive.

• Selection committee comprises the Lieutenant Governor, Senate standing committee chair with culture and arts jurisdiction, and House standing committee chair with culture and arts jurisdiction; public may submit nominations.

• Appropriates unspecified funds from general revenues for fiscal years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 to establish and administer the program; effective date July 1, 2050.
