SB 627 Summary

• Amends Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 11-381 to allow candidates, treasurers, and candidate committees to use campaign funds for child care and vital household dependent care costs under specified conditions.

• Child care and dependent care expenses are limited to costs incurred from January 1 of the election year through the day after the primary or general election in which the candidate appears on the ballot.

• Requires that care costs would not have been incurred but for the candidate's participation in their own campaign activity and prohibits payments to immediate family members for such services.

• Defines "child" as a person under twelve years of age (biological, adopted, foster, stepchild, or legal ward) and "vital household dependent" as a household member physically or mentally incapable of self-care.

• Effective June 30, 3000.
