S.B. 666 Summary

• Amends Chapter 27, Hawaii Revised Statutes to require the State, to the extent practicable, to plant fruit-bearing trees in new or renovated landscaping for state buildings, facilities, housing, highways, and other public areas.

• Authorizes any person to harvest fruit from fruit trees planted under this section without requiring a permit or license, while preserving the State's authority to enforce trespassing laws and other property owner rights.

• Provides liability immunity for the State and its political subdivisions, agencies, officials, and employees from civil damages or criminal penalties resulting from injuries or illnesses arising from harvesting or consuming fruit, including food-borne illnesses.

• Takes effect upon approval.
