Amends the definition of "dangerous to self" to include persons who are "gravely disabled" in addition to those who have recently threatened or attempted suicide or serious bodily harm.

Defines "gravely disabled" as a condition where a person is unable, without supervision and assistance, to prevent physical or psychiatric deterioration or to satisfy basic needs for nourishment, medical care, shelter, or self-protection.

Defines "psychiatric deterioration" as a substantial impairment or obvious decline in an individual's judgment, reasoning, or ability to control behavior.

Broadens the definition of "imminently dangerous to self or others" by extending the timeframe from 45 days to 90 days without intervention.

Increases the maximum period of emergency hospitalization from 48 hours to 72 hours before a patient must be released unless voluntarily admitted or court-ordered evaluation proceedings are initiated.
