HB 2457 Summary

• Expands the Department of Law Enforcement's accreditation requirement from only the sheriff division to all divisions and sections within the department, requiring accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).

• Establishes five (5.0 FTE) CALEA coordinator positions within the Department of Law Enforcement, exempt from civil service requirements, to ensure the department maintains CALEA standards and that law enforcement officers meet the standards set by the law enforcement standards board.

• Amends Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 76-16(b) to add the five CALEA coordinator positions as paragraph (37) to the list of positions exempt from civil service.

• Grants the director of the Department of Law Enforcement authority to appoint and terminate the coordinator positions without regard to civil service law and the ability to set their compensation.

• Takes effect upon approval.
