Appropriates funds from general revenues for fiscal year 2024-2025 to the Department of Transportation for equipment and full-time equivalent positions to improve Hana Highway on Maui.

Authorized uses of appropriated funds include road repairs, brush clearing and vegetation maintenance, additional and replacement signage, repairs to emergency call boxes, and other necessary activities.

Hana Highway is 64.4 miles long with 59 bridges, 620 curves and blind turns, and some one-way traffic sections; serves as the primary route for east Maui residents and averages approximately 1,900 daily tourist trips.

Legislature finds the highway is in severe need of repair and maintenance due to unsafe conditions that delay emergency services, create extended commutes, and cause accidents.

Bill takes effect July 1, 3000, and includes acknowledgment that the appropriation will exceed the state general fund expenditure ceiling for fiscal year 2024-2025.
