HB 793 Summary

• Authorizes public schools and public charter schools to designate at least one trained employee on duty during school days to administer seizure rescue medications, vagus nerve stimulator magnets, or assist students with self-administration of these treatments, effective January 1, 2025.

• Requires training of designated school employees either through a department-adopted training program or by a physician, advanced practice registered nurse, or physician assistant on seizure recognition, symptoms, and first aid procedures.

• Mandates annual one-hour self-study review of seizure disorder materials for all principals, guidance counselors, and teachers, and permits schools to provide age-appropriate seizure education to students consistent with Epilepsy Foundation guidelines.

• Allows schools to establish seizure action plans for students with diagnosed seizure disorders, identifying trained employees and contact methods, to be distributed to relevant staff and kept on file.

• Appropriates funds for fiscal years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 to train employees at public schools and charter schools to administer seizure rescue medication; exempts schools without students having seizure disorders or seizure rescue medications.
