State and county agencies responsible for removing deceased dogs and cats from public roadways are requested to scan for microchips and record the microchip number, location found, pet description, and any identifying information from tags or collars

Agencies are requested to timely notify county animal services or animal service contractors of deceased pets with all recorded information to enable follow-up with registered owners

Resolution recognizes that approximately sixty percent of Hawaii households have at least one dog or cat and that microchip scanning is essential for notifying owners and providing closure

Certified copies of the resolution are to be transmitted to the Board of Agriculture Chairperson, Department of Transportation Deputy Director, county mayors, and leadership of the Hawaiian Humane Society, Kauai Humane Society, and Maui Humane Society
