Department of Education, in collaboration with the Department of Law Enforcement, is requested to conduct a feasibility study on school resource officers in Hawaii schools.

Study must examine the potential effects of having school resource officers on educational institution campuses.

Department of Education must submit a report with findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2025.

Resolution cites recent safety incidents at Hawaiian schools including armed individual lockdowns at Waikoloa Elementary (November 2022) and Waimanalo Elementary (January 2024), gun threats at Waianae and Castle High Schools (October 2023), and an armed robbery at Nanakuli High School (December 2023).

Certified copies of the resolution must be transmitted to the Board of Education Chairperson, Superintendent of Education, and Director of Law Enforcement.
