S.B. 1504 Summary

• Establishes a Museum of Modern Hawaii History within the state foundation on culture and the arts, focused on Hawaii's territorial and statehood eras and the state's contributions to national and global progress.

• Museum shall chronicle Hawaii's milestones and leadership on issues including social integration, World War II era contributions, ocean science, astronomy, music and arts, Title IX, legal abortion, accessible healthcare, same-sex marriage, and climate change initiatives.

• Creates a task force to develop plans for establishment, construction, and operation of the museum, with members from the foundation on culture and the arts, Hawaii tourism authority, state archives, University of Hawaii, legislature, and judiciary.

• Task force must submit a report to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the 2025 regular session with establishment plans, proposed partnerships with other institutions, and legislative recommendations.

• Appropriates unspecified funding from general revenues for fiscal years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 to support task force operations; effective date is July 1, 2050.
