Number plates issued on or after January 1, 2025 must display "Hawai'i" (with okina diacritical mark) instead of "Hawaii" along the upper portion, with "Aloha State" on the lower portion; text may use all uppercase, all lowercase, or initial capital letters.

Number plates issued before January 1, 2025 continue to display "Hawaii" without the okina.

Special environmental conservation number plates are limited to electric vehicles as defined in section 196-2 that produce zero emissions.

Special environmental conservation number plates must be securely fastened to the electric vehicle in lieu of the uniform state number plate and receive the same benefits and restrictions as other electric vehicle special plates.

Director of finance may revoke special environmental conservation number plates if fewer than 150 registered electric vehicle owners obtain them within three years of the first issuance.
