S.B. 2657 Summary

• Amends Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 8-19 to change Makahiki Commemoration Day from a fixed date of November 20th to one of the kapu Hua days of Mōhalu, Hua, or Akua of the lunar month of ʻIkuā.

• Establishes that the calendar date for Makahiki Commemoration Day shall be determined yearly using various technologies that track celestial phenomena to calculate the equivalent Gregorian calendar date.

• Designates the day to recognize the Makahiki, a Hawaiian season and New Year festival that celebrates harvest, bounty, and the god Lono.

• Clarifies that Makahiki Commemoration Day is not and shall not be construed as a state holiday.

• Becomes effective upon approval.
