S.B. 682 Summary

• Prohibits the sale, offer for sale, display for sale, trade, or distribution of fur products in Hawaii, with a sale deemed to occur in Hawaii if the buyer takes physical possession in the state or the seller is located in Hawaii.

• Exempts used fur products sold by individuals, nonprofit organizations, or second-hand stores; fur products used in traditional and customary rights protected by the Hawaii State Constitution; and fur products where the activity is expressly authorized by federal law.

• Excludes from the definition of "fur product" leather items with hair removed, cowhide, deerskin, lambskin or sheepskin with hair attached, and taxidermied animal pelts.

• Imposes civil penalties not to exceed $1,000 per violation, with each fur product sold in violation and each day of violation constituting a separate offense.

• Effective June 30, 3000.
