Request the State Auditor to conduct an audit of the Department of Education's statewide backlog of capital improvement repair and maintenance projects.

Include projects relating to the renovation of central, district, and program offices in the audit scope.

The Department of Education is responsible for 4,425 buildings statewide (over 20 million square feet), with approximately 20 percent of the 257 public schools over 100 years old and an average building age of 72 years.

The repair and maintenance backlog has grown to over $1.4 billion, with more than 4,600 projects needed to be undertaken or completed, increasing from $293 million (initially reported in January 2018) to $868 million (corrected figure).

Auditor must submit findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation to the Legislature no later than 20 days before the convening of the 2025 Regular Session.
