H.B. 898 Summary

• Adds new section to Hawaii Revised Statutes Chapter 286 establishing registration category for former military vehicles at least 25 years old, including Pinzgauers, Kaiser Jeep M715s, Humvees, and DUKWs.

• Permits former military vehicle owners to use vehicles for transporting owner's property and passengers without charge in furtherance of owner's primary business, with passenger transport limited to direct trips to and from owner's place of business.

• Prohibits former military vehicles from being used for transportation of persons or property for hire, and limits cargo to 500 pounds (excluding camper equipment, trailers, and occupants in driver's compartment).

• Classifies former military vehicles as special interest vehicles under section 286-2, Hawaii Revised Statutes, allowing them to be collected, preserved, restored, or maintained.

• Takes effect January 1, 2026.
