HI SB112

Allows surviving immediate family members of deceased persons to request and receive a copy of the closing police report after the conclusion of criminal proceedings, five years after report completion, or seven years after the incident, whichever occurs first.

Defines "surviving immediate family member" as grandparents, parents, siblings, spouses, reciprocal beneficiaries, children, or legal guardians of the deceased.

Requires reports be provided in electronic or physical form per the requester's preference, with all information pertaining to minors and confidential personal information redacted.

Permits investigating police departments to delay report release if the investigation has been reopened within six months before the request, but requires release without further delay upon conclusion of the reopened investigation.

Does not diminish any existing rights of family members or other persons to receive police reports or government records at other times through other legal means.
