Beginning July 1, 2027, newly installed or modified individual wastewater systems within 200 feet of a shoreline must include denitrification capacity to reduce nitrogen pollution

In counties with populations between 190,000 and 800,000, the denitrification requirement extends to 1,200 feet from the shoreline for systems in areas with highly porous soils (over 75% porosity)

Denitrification capacity requires certification meeting NSF/ANSI Standard 245 for residential wastewater treatment with a minimum 50% nitrogen reduction

The Department of Health must provide reduced disposal system requirements for wastewater systems that include denitrification capacity

The legislation aims to protect nearshore waters and coral reef ecosystems from nitrogen pollution caused by conventional individual wastewater systems
