Haleakalā's summit is a sacred and culturally significant site to Native Hawaiians, holding deep spiritual, genealogical, and traditional importance, and lies within a State Conservation District

Community members oppose the project due to concerns about transparency, environmental impacts, further militarization of Hawaiʻi, and potential restrictions on public access and traditional cultural practices
