Hawaii Senate endorses Waikiki's recognition as a World Surfing Reserve through the Save the Waves Coalition program, which identifies and preserves outstanding global surf zones.

Waikiki is recognized as the birthplace of surfing, where Native Hawaiian surfers like Duke Kahanamoku introduced the sport to the world, making wave-riding and surfboard-crafting important cultural artforms preserving Hawaiian heritage.

The area hosts more than a dozen popular surf breaks suitable for all skill levels, multiple annual competitions, and supports protected species including Green Sea Turtles and endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals.

Waikiki serves as Hawaii's largest tourist destination contributing millions to state GDP, with existing management frameworks through the Waikiki Beach Special Improvement District Association and Community Advisory Committee.

Certified copies of the resolution will be transmitted to the Board of Land and Natural Resources, Mayor of Honolulu, and the Waikiki Beach Special Improvement District Association Board of Directors.
