Teachers may exclude students from classrooms for disorderly conduct, including violent behavior or threats, disrupting school services, disturbing classroom peace and order, threatening or intimidating others, or using abusive or profane language.

Students in grades K-5 who are excluded cannot return until the principal provides written notice to the teacher; students in grades 6-12 cannot return until at least the next school day after receiving written notice.

Students excluded three times within any 30-day period must receive in-school or out-of-school suspension, or be recommended for placement in an alternative learning environment approved by the superintendent.

The requirements apply equally to traditional school districts, charter schools, and innovation zone schools under Iowa Code sections 256E.7 and 256F.4.

Discipline policies must remain consistent with federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (20 U.S.C. §1400) and Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 U.S.C. §701) requirements.
