Social workers employed by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services who conduct child protective assessments, family assessments, safety planning, or related field investigations would be included in the protection occupation category of the Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System (IPERS).

Eligible social workers must perform duties involving heightened risk, including entering private residences, interacting with potentially violent or intoxicated individuals, evaluating allegations of child abuse or neglect, or coordinating emergency removal of children.

Prior service by qualifying social workers would be reclassified as protection occupation service without requiring additional contributions to cover actuarial costs, if certified by the employer.

Protection occupation status provides enhanced retirement benefits typically reserved for law enforcement, firefighters, and other high-risk public safety positions.
