Forfeited weapons and ammunition from serious misdemeanors, aggravated misdemeanors, or felonies must be deposited with the Iowa Department of Public Safety for disposal according to department rules

Weapons may be held for law enforcement use, criminalistics laboratory testing and comparison, or destroyed

Legal ammunition and firearms (not classified as offensive weapons under section 724.1) may be sold or released to law enforcement agencies upon application following department rules

Department of Public Safety must conduct an annual audit of all forfeited weapons received, including documentation of each weapon's use and location
