Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, Iowa schools and athletic organizations must observe mandatory noncontact periods during which coaches, directors, and teachers cannot have contact with students regarding extracurricular interscholastic activities including athletics, dance, cheerleading, band, show choir, and theater.

Four noncontact periods are required annually: a continuous 10-day period in summer, a continuous 7-day period in November, December 25 through January 1, and a continuous 7-day period during spring break.

All high school students, including incoming ninth graders, are prohibited from having contact with coaches, directors, or teachers—on or off school premises—or using school facilities for these activities during noncontact periods.

Nonschool-sponsored organizations that operate extracurricular interscholastic athletic contests or competitions in Iowa must also observe the same noncontact periods.
