Vehicles left unclaimed for 40 days are deemed abandoned, and the officer in possession must follow impoundment procedures under Section 321.89

Police authorities must tow and impound abandoned vehicles on public property, or may hire a garagekeeper to do so; private property owners may directly hire garagekeepers to remove abandoned vehicles

Within 10 days of towing, the impounding party must notify the registered owner, any lienholder, and known claimants with vehicle details and reclamation instructions

Owners have 20 days from notice to reclaim the vehicle or personal property inside; failure to reclaim constitutes waiver of interest and consent for the vehicle to be sold or disposed

Registered owners may retrieve personal property from inside the vehicle without paying fees, but are limited to one opportunity to do so
