Tenants may conduct radon tests themselves or hire a certified professional under Iowa Code chapter 136B, and must provide written results to landlords if radon levels reach 4 picocuries per liter or higher (the EPA action level)

Landlords may request a confirmatory radon test by a certified person and must share those results with the tenant

If radon levels remain at or above 4 picocuries per liter after confirmatory testing, or if the landlord declines to conduct one, the landlord must install a certified radon mitigation system and retest the unit within 90 days

Tenants may terminate their lease without penalty if the landlord fails to install a mitigation system within 90 days or if radon levels remain elevated after mitigation, with full return of prepaid rent and security deposit

"Radon mitigation system" is defined as a system designed to reduce radon presence in a building, installed by a person certified under Iowa Code chapter 136B
