Counties in Iowa may secede from the state by adopting an ordinance, after which the county and its residents would no longer be subject to Iowa laws or the state Constitution

All real and personal property owned by the state of Iowa within a seceding county would remain under state ownership and control

Secession ordinances must have an effective date of at least one year after adoption

Secession requires federal government approval plus either approval from another state to join that state, or federal approval to become a separate state or territory
