Veterans with at least four years of active duty military service and primary military occupational specialty as military police may qualify for lateral transfer to Iowa law enforcement agencies without completing the standard academy training program

Eligible veterans must have completed accredited military police training equivalent to or exceeding academy standards and received an honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions

Veterans must submit applications to the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Council with proof of military service, discharge status, certification of military police training, and documentation of relevant duties performed

Veterans granted a certificate of equivalency must complete a one-week Iowa-specific law enforcement orientation course covering state laws, procedures, and community policing, plus undergo required background checks and psychological evaluations

The council is required to develop evaluation procedures and guidelines for military police training equivalency and publish annual reports on veterans transitioning to state law enforcement and their performance
