Health carriers offering individual, group, or small group insurance policies in Iowa must provide coverage for eating disorder treatment, including health care services pursuant to a patient's treatment plan developed by a health care professional

Covered eating disorders include pica, rumination disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other conditions listed in the DSM published by the American Psychiatric Association

Coverage must include out-of-network or out-of-state services when treatment is unavailable in Iowa and deemed medically necessary by the patient's provider, with cost-sharing requirements no less favorable than those for general physical illness

Applies to accident and sickness insurance, hospital/medical service contracts, HMO contracts, public employee plans, and the Medicaid program including managed care organizations, effective January 1, 2026

Excludes accident-only, specified disease, short-term, dental, vision, Medicare supplement, long-term care, disability income, workers' compensation, and automobile medical payment insurance
