Iowa General Assembly established the Iowa Statehouse Taiwan Friendship Caucus in November 2021 with bipartisan support, becoming the fourth such caucus in midwestern states.

Taiwan and Iowa signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Economic Cooperation and Trade Relations in 2024, and in November 2025 the Iowa Economic Development Authority assigned a trade representative to its Taiwan office.

U.S. agricultural exports to Taiwan (soybeans, corn, wheat, beef) totaled $8.46 billion between 2021-2024, with Taiwan's President Lai announcing plans to increase purchases to $10 billion between 2025-2028, an 18% increase.

The resolution supports Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations and condemns efforts to undermine Taiwan's sovereign status through distortion of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758.

2026 marks the 250th anniversary of U.S. founding and the 30th anniversary of Taiwan's first direct presidential election, with the resolution reaffirming commitment to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
