Beginning with the 2030-2031 graduating class, Iowa high school students must complete one semester of computer science (or equivalent) to graduate, which may include computer science instruction provided in grade eight.

Computer science education standards at all grade levels must include instruction on artificial intelligence fundamentals, including what AI is, how it works, its societal impacts, and ethical considerations.

The Department of Education must publish by June 30, 2027, a list of approved computer science courses and a plan to expand statewide computer science teacher capacity, with specific support for schools with fewer than 500 students in grades 9-12.

Up to one unit of computer science instruction may count toward the required mathematics units and up to one unit may count toward the required science units for high school graduation.

Iowa public universities must accept computer science coursework as meeting admissions requirements for mathematics or science, and practitioner preparation programs must include computer science content in elementary and secondary teacher training.
