Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, organizations must observe mandatory noncontact periods during which coaches, directors, and teachers cannot have contact with students regarding extracurricular interscholastic activities including athletics, dance, cheerleading, band, show choir, and theater.

All high school students, including incoming ninth graders, are prohibited from having contact with coaches, directors, or teachers, or using school facilities for these activities during noncontact periods, whether on or off school premises.

Four noncontact periods are required annually: a continuous 10-day summer period, a continuous 7-day period in November, the period between December 25 and January 1, and a continuous 7-day period during spring break.

Nonschool-sponsored organizations that operate extracurricular interscholastic athletic contests or competitions in Iowa must also observe these noncontact periods.
