Retired IPERS members who are certified law enforcement officers may elect out of retirement system coverage within 60 days of being reemployed as school resource officers, with the election being irrevocable once approved.

Beginning July 1, 2026, retired IPERS members under age 65 who are reemployed as school resource officers are exempt from the standard benefit reduction of 50 cents for every $1 earned over $50,000.

Employment as a school resource officer by a certified law enforcement officer does not count as "covered employment" for purposes of determining bona fide retirement status under IPERS.

Retired members of the municipal fire and police retirement system who are reemployed as school resource officers may continue receiving their full service retirement allowance during the reemployment period without recalculation.
