Health carriers offering individual, group, or small group health insurance plans in Iowa must offer coverage for diagnosis and treatment of Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS), and postinfectious autoimmune encephalopathy

Covered treatments may include antibiotics, drugs and behavioral therapies for neuropsychiatric symptoms, plasma exchange, and immunoglobulin, when recommended by a health care professional as medically necessary

Coverage cannot be denied or delayed because a patient has previously received treatment for these conditions or has been diagnosed with other medical conditions

Coverage cannot be limited over a person's lifetime except by policy period or when the health care professional determines treatment is no longer beneficial

Requirements apply to contracts, policies, or plans delivered, issued, continued, or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, with exceptions for accident-only, dental, vision, Medicare supplement, long-term care, and other specified insurance types
