Altering or tampering with a gift card with intent to defraud constitutes forgery, also punishable as an aggravated misdemeanor

Devising fraudulent schemes to obtain gift cards or using illegally obtained gift cards carries penalties ranging from serious misdemeanor ($500 or less) to class "C" felony (over $5,000)

Value of merchandise obtained through gift card violations may be aggregated over any six-month period to determine the applicable charge level
