Law enforcement officers eligible for retirement benefits under IPERS (Chapter 97B) or the Municipal Fire and Police Retirement System (Chapter 411) on or after July 1, 2025, may receive a cash payment of up to $2,000 for accrued sick leave upon retirement or death while employed

Eligible officers may elect to use remaining sick leave value beyond the $2,000 cash payment to cover the employer's share of group health insurance premiums after retirement

Health insurance premium payments from sick leave continue until the balance is exhausted, the retiree becomes eligible for Medicare, or the retiree dies

Officers covered by collective bargaining agreements that provide otherwise are excluded from these benefits

Officers who return to permanent full-time or part-time employment with their previous government employer forfeit any remaining sick leave balance and cannot have prior accrued leave restored
