School bus drivers are no longer required to complete a Department of Education approved course of instruction unless their employing school district specifically requires it

School districts that require the course must have drivers complete it before or within the first six months of employment, and at least every 24 months thereafter

If a district requires the course and a driver fails to provide a certificate of completion, the employer must report the failure to the Department of Education and the driver's authorization to operate a school bus will be revoked

A driver whose authorization is revoked for failing to complete a required course may regain authorization by either completing an approved course or by being hired by a school district that does not require course completion

Drivers must still hold a valid driver's license from the Department of Transportation and a certificate of qualification for operating a commercial motor vehicle issued by an authorized medical professional
