Idaho Firearms Freedom Act (HB 589) Summary

• Declares that firearms, firearm accessories, and ammunition manufactured in Idaho and remaining within Idaho borders are not subject to federal regulation under the interstate commerce clause.

• Requires all firearms manufactured or sold in Idaho under this law to have "Made in Idaho" clearly stamped on a central metallic part such as the receiver or frame.

• Excludes from the law's protections: firearms that cannot be carried by one person, firearms with bore diameter greater than 1.5 inches using smokeless powder, explosive ammunition, and automatic or multi-round weapons.

• Applies only to firearms manufactured from basic materials (such as unmachined steel and unshaped wood) after October 1, 2010, and permits use of generic parts like springs and screws sourced from other states.

• Authorizes the Idaho Constitutional Defense Council to enter litigation and expend funds to defend Idaho citizens in legal matters arising from implementation of this act.
