All motor carriers are subject to compliance review and safety inspections by state police employees for federal motor carrier safety, hazardous materials regulations, and Idaho law compliance, with written inspection reports provided following each inspection.

Certain intrastate motor carriers are exempt from full safety inspections but remain subject to inspections of brakes, lights, turn signals, steering, sound devices, glass, mirrors, exhaust systems, windshield wipers, and tires.

Exempt categories include school buses, taxicabs within 25 miles of jurisdiction, hotel shuttle vehicles, farm vehicles, newspaper distribution vehicles, U.S. mail carriers, forest product transporters, mine product transporters, household goods movers, and wrecker/tow trucks.

Motor carriers receiving inspection reports indicating non-compliance must certify in writing to the director within 15 days that they have corrected violations; failure to comply or false certification results in administrative penalties not exceeding $100.

Penalties collected from non-compliance violations are deposited to the state highway account.
