Senate Bill 1070 Summary

• Establishes a felony for knowingly causing another person to commit or attempt suicide through force or duress, punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment.

• Establishes a felony for knowingly and intentionally assisting another person to commit or attempt suicide by providing physical means or participating in a physical act, punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment.

• Authorizes licensing authorities to revoke health care professional licenses upon conviction or guilty plea for these offenses, or for contempt of court violations of related injunctions.

• Allows spouses, parents, children, siblings, court-appointed guardians, beneficiaries, health care providers, and public officials to seek injunctive relief against persons believed to be violating or about to violate these provisions.

• Exempts health care professionals who administer pain relief medications or procedures that may hasten death (unless knowingly intended to cause death) and those who withhold or withdraw treatment in compliance with advance directive documents.
