County sheriffs shall seek reimbursement from prisoners for jail maintenance costs at a maximum of $25.00 per day up to $500 total, plus collection expenses and investigation costs for financial status.

Sheriffs must develop a standardized financial status form before seeking reimbursement that documents prisoner assets including real estate, personal property, investments, bank accounts, pensions, and wages.

Prisoners must provide accurate financial information and cooperate with sheriffs; those who willfully refuse forfeit eligibility for sentence reductions under Idaho Code Section 20-621.

Counties may file civil actions in magistrate's division within one year of prisoner release to recover incarceration costs, but only if assets justify recovery and collection will not cause the person or dependents to qualify for public assistance.

Court judgments for prisoner reimbursement may be collected against commissary accounts in any jail in Idaho, and recovered funds must be credited to the county's justice or current expense fund for jail maintenance purposes.
