Drivers meeting or overtaking a stopped school bus with activated visual signals must stop before reaching the bus and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or signals cease.

Oncoming traffic on highways with more than three lanes is not required to stop for a school bus with actuated visual signals.

Violation of school bus stopping requirements results in a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $500.

School bus drivers shall only actuate visual signals when the vehicle is stopped on a highway to receive or discharge children, and shall not actuate signals in business districts, at traffic-controlled intersections, or in designated loading areas off the roadway.

When a school bus is sold and no longer used for pupil transportation, it must be repainted a color other than school bus yellow (federal standard 595a, color number 13432) and all school bus markings must be obliterated before returning to highway use.
