HB 181 Summary

• Establishes the Naturopathic Medical Physicians Licensing Act creating a new Board of Naturopathic Physicians within the Department of Self-Governing Agencies consisting of 5 members (3 naturopathic physicians, 1 MD, 1 pharmacist).

• Requires naturopathic physician licensure for persons practicing naturopathic medicine; applicants must graduate from an approved naturopathic medical program and pass the NPLEX examination (or meet legacy education requirements with 5 years prior practice).

• Authorizes licensed naturopathic physicians to perform diagnostic examinations, prescribe medications and devices within an established formulary, and perform minor office procedures, while prohibiting surgery, anesthetics, controlled substances, and other restricted medical procedures.

• Establishes license fees not to exceed $250 for application, $1,000 for initial license, and $1,000 for renewal; all fees deposited to occupational license account.

• Sets sunset date of July 1, 2021 for the entire act; requires Board to report to legislature in 2021 on naturopathic medicine practice in Idaho.
