AI Summary
-
Fire protection boards composed of 5 members may vote by four-fifths majority to decrease board size to 3 members under new section 31-1410B.

When a board reduces from 5 to 3 members, the district must be subdivided into 3 subdistricts as nearly equal in population, area, and mileage as practicable.

Fire protection boards must revise subdistricts within 6 months following each decennial U.S. census to equalize population, area, and mileage between subdistricts as nearly as practicable.
-
Commissioners appointed by the governor are not disqualified from completing their terms due to subdistrict residence requirements, and revision of subdistricts does not disqualify elected commissioners from completing their terms.
-
Fire districts that previously reduced board size from 5 to 3 members must adopt a transition schedule before the next election, with commissioners whose offices expire in 2016 and any even-numbered year remaining in office until the next odd-numbered year election.
