All secondary pupils must successfully complete a civics test or an alternate path established by their school district or charter school starting with the 2016-2017 school year to demonstrate they have met state civics and government standards.

School districts and charter schools must document on a student's transcript that the student has passed the civics test.

The civics test is defined as the 100 questions used by United States citizenship and immigration services for naturalization applicants to demonstrate knowledge of U.S. history and principles of government, as required by 8 U.S.C. section 1423.

Students may take the civics test in whole or in part at any time after enrolling in grade 7 and may repeat the test as often as necessary to pass.

School districts and charter schools may determine the method and manner in which to administer the civics test, and the state board of education may promulgate implementing rules.
