Boundary County was created by House Bill No. 1 during the Thirteenth Idaho Legislature, signed by Governor Moses Alexander on January 25, 1915, with Bonners Ferry designated as the county seat.

The county is Idaho's only county with an international border, bordering Canada to the north, Washington to the west, and Montana to the east, consisting of 1,278 square miles with 9.3 square miles of water.

The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, the ancestral inhabitants of the Kootenai Valley, declared a peaceful war on the United States on September 20, 1974, and were subsequently deeded 12.5 acres of land.

Major infrastructure developments include the Northern Pacific Railroad (1882) and Great Northern Railroad (1892), the first fire department (1904), electricity (1905), first hospital (1907), and the Libby Dam completed in July 1973.

The county's economy historically relied on mining, timber (over 10 sawmills), and farming, with the Boundary County Courthouse (1935-1937) listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
